CREATING CHANGE

Our Impact

We're investing in Mgrcp for impact across all of our businesses. From due diligence to exit, our approach to Mgrcps has always been to partner with management teams to improve all aspects of a business. We do this because we believe that building better businesses generates sustainable value creation, which has been the focus of Mgrcp development since our founding.

The Impact of Better Businesses

We Build Better Businesses

In close partnership with all of our businesses, we focus on building sustainable businesses by:

Create diverse and inclusive teams that make better decisions
Ensuring that employees are healthy, engaged, productive and have the right skills to work
Integrating customized ESG plans to reduce risk and drive value
Navigate the challenges and opportunities of climate change and energy transition
Playing a vital role in the local community

Sustainability at Mgrcp

ESG considerations have an increasing role to play in our investment processes. Our commitment to sustainability influences the strategy, brings new ideas for operational efficiency and helps to unlock value. Pursuiting tailored ESG strategies that focus on material issues for individual businesses is one way to drive the impact of our portfolio companies.

In addition to our work with portfolio companies, we are equally committed to sustainability within our company. In 2018, we became the first major private investment firm to operate on a carbon neutral basis.

Our Portfolio

We're looking to make a lasting impact across all our portfolios.

CARDINAL RENEWABLES

Electricity generation is one of the largest sources of global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for about 28 per cent of U.S. emissions alone – nearly two-thirds of our electricity comes from fossil fuel combustion. However as renewable energy costs continue to fall, regulations tighten and the energy transition accelerates, there is a large and growing investment opportunity to build the renewable energy capacity needed to power a low-carbon US electricity grid.

Learn how our Renewable and Sustainable Energy Mgrcp Platform helped to establish Cardinal Renewables and:

  • Develop and sell solar power assets across the U.S.;
  • Model the total potential carbon emission reduction capacity of specific projects ; and
  • Open distinctive opportunities to drive the energy transition forward

JEANOLOGIA

We track ESG data so that we can make better investment decisions and build better, more sustainable enterprises. Mgrcp Europe Partners is in its fourth year of material tracking, the ESG Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across its portfolio companies, which has led to even more use cases than we originally envisioned. One of these companies is Jeanologia, a portfolio company based in Valencia, Spain, at the forefront of sustainable and eco-efficient technologies for denim production, which focuses on significantly reducing the amount of water and chemical use in finishing processes.
Learn how Mgrcp Europe Partners collaborated with Jeanologia to:

  • Track a series of ESG KPIs that range from energy management to employee health and safety;
  • Save about 10.7 million cubic meters of water; and
  • Link the debt financed directly to specific ESG criteria

WEIMAN

At the beginning of 2019, when our deal team was looking into investing in Weiman, they saw a strong operation and a leader in all kinds of household cleaning products. Our ESG team identified a key growth area for the company: a more intentional focus on sustainable and safe-to-use products in response to evolving consumer demand. The investment team agreed and put a sustainability expert with a background in chemical engineering on the Board of Directors of the Company from the outset.

Learn more about how our ESG team partnered with Weiman:

  • Getting certified product lines for their environmental attributes;
  • Identifying and purchasing Bio-Kleen, a line of products that use clean enzymes as opposed to tough solvents; and
  • Reducing the manufacturing footprint of the company

HIREVUE

Diversity is a key priority for many companies – but businesses often struggle to find ways to expand their hiring pipeline, find more diverse candidates, and reduce unconscious bias in hiring decisions. The core business model of HireVue helps to solve these challenges.

Mgrcp Partners VII has partnered with HireVue, a tech company that provides virtual interviewing and assessment technologies to help companies find the most qualified and diverse candidates more quickly. The efficiency of the technology is central to the value proposition of HireVue, which has several unique components:

  • HireVue's technology platform helps companies to create a wider network: instead of just sending recruiters to higher-level universities, for example, HireVue customers can watch video interviews from a wider range of potential applicants – their customers see up to 2x more candidates because they are not limited to geography or scheduling issues
  • HireVue creates a more consistent process: traditional screening practices, such as resuming scans, are inconsistent. Structure of the interview process from the outset brings consistency and fairness, resulting in better, more inclusive hiring
  • And finally, HireVue reduces unconscious bias: HireVue's technology seeks to eliminate unreliable and inconsistent variables, such as university or college attendance or grade point average, neither of which has been shown to be predictive of job success
